In Michael K. Farr’s book, Restoring Our American Dream, he spends a good deal of print on the importance of trust.  He drives home his point by exploring how trust is eroded and the challenge of earning trust, especially after it has eroded.  In specific, he addresses what went wrong with the financial meltdown of 2008 and what is needed to get the U.S. financially back on track.

His macro lessons are applicable to any organization, any business, any CEO.  Have you considered the importance of owning the trust of your organization?  Without it, your business is crippled, not capable of achieving anything near its potential.  So, if you have lost the trust of key employees, what can you do? CEOs might take direction from Cicero when it comes to virtueWhat obligation does the CEO have as the moral leader of a privately held enterprise? Sounds like a good roundtable discussion that could result in energized conversation for hours. It will not take that long to make my point.

Personal virtue was part of the Roman culture 2000 years ago. Although the Roman republic turned out to be a failed experiment, and the ensuing empire was far from flawless, the Roman concept of virtue had a lot to do with the profound influence of that culture on the history of Western Civilization.

CEO New Year's Resolutions

My “Resolutions”

A new year is launched and they’re at it again – telling us we need to formulate our New Year’s Resolutions.  I don’t do New Year’s Resolutions (except…well… see below).  But it occurred to me that this resolution concept might be useful in dealing with the challenge of the first step in the strategic planning process – articulating your vision.

Yesterday I sent to my family members a list of my seven “resolutions” for 2012.  These were not goals – i.e., they were not specific and measurable in the manner of good business goals.  Rather, they were direction-setting commitments.  For example, number 3 was “to be increasingly creative in what I do.” Continue reading
